ANDREA DEMIROVIC

Andrea Demirovic (born June 17, 1985) is a Montenegrin singer and also a student of the Music Academy in Cetinje. In 2002, she made her appearance at the Suncane Skale festival as a first step and it was the turning point in her professional career. After many more festival appearances, she got first place on the contest "Evropjesma" in 2005. In 2006, her first album "Andrea" was released under the City Records and Limark. Most songs and lyrics were given by famous Croatian singer/ writer/ composer Vesna Pisarevic although one song "Sta ce mi dani" was made personally by Andrea. Since her producers presented Andrea as an artist to agents of British company Vord and they accepted her potentiality, many foreign artists and authors have showed a lot of interest to work with her. Through many cooperations, she builds up her career and it places Andrea to be one of most popular singers in Montenegro.

Now she is representing Montenegro with the song "Just Get Out of My Life" in Eurovision song contest 2009 in Moscow. She is the first female singer to represent Montenegro at the contest.

Section Two: Song Informantion

For Monetenegro's 2009 Eurovision entry they have selected to go with the song "Just Get Out of My Life" performed by singer/pianist Andrea Demirovic. The song was composed by famed German composer Ralph Siegel and was written by Bernd Meinunger and Jose Juan Santana Rodriguez. The song is sung in English, making this Montenegro's first ever eurovision entry sung in english. The song is about a love gone wrong, Andrea is describing her strong love for a person that everyone thinks isn't any good for her and is just playing with her mind. In the beginning of the song she says "Everybody's sayin' your love is like a prision, Everybody's tryin' to help me to come free, Everybody's talkin' 'bout all the things I'm missin', And for all them reasons I must agree." Here she is explaining how this man's love has blinded her and imprisoned her but her friends are helping her to see clearly that this love isn't the right choice and these lyrics are showing us that she has finally come to the realization that she needs to end this relationship. This song seems to be heavily influenced by American disco music of the 1970's, the only instrument that I can hear is the piano, the rest seems to be produced from a music production center. It seems that feelings towards Andrea's song are pretty split, people either praise the song for its ability to make people want to dance or people who slam the song going as far as to call it "cheesy" and "disgraceful."

Section Three: Narrative of Entry

Traditionally in the past Montenegro has had a very public approach to selecting their contestants. In the past there was a televised program where citizens of Montenegro could vote on 6 different contestants to represent them in Eurovision. However this year there was an open call for songs that was held by the RTCG (radio television of Montenegro) which is public broadcasting agency that is in control of Montenegro radio and television. This is almost more of a song search, because whoever is selected is not necessarily guaranteed to perform and can be replaced by someone who the RTCG feels could do a better job. Andrea Demirovic sent in a tape to the RTCG and was lucky enough to be the one chose for this year's entry, this on her third attempt at the illustrious honor.

The song “Just Get Out of my Life” was written by the famous Ralph Siegel. He is a famous German born composer, who has the record for the most written songs in Eurovision (19 counting this year’s entry), and wrote a winning song for Germany in 1982. A mutual friend of Andrea Demirovic and Ralph Siegel named Jose Juan Santana brought the two together. Mr. Santana actually wrote the lyrics to the song “Just Get Out of my Life”. The three of them then flew to Munich and recorded their song. This year’s entry is unique in the fact that this is the first Montenegro has performed a song in English, this includes there entries with the former Yugoslavia and Serbia.

Section Four: Montenegro's Eurovision History

Montenegro has a long history with Eurovision Song Contest as a part of other countries, however in 2007 Montenegro entered the competition, and debuted as its own country.
external image montenegro.jpgThe countries first Eurovision contest was in 1961 where it competed as a part of Yugoslavia, and continued to do so in 1991 and 1992. The contestants from Yugoslavia’s Eurovision competitions in 1983 and 1984 were from Montenegro also. In 2005 Montenegro was still part of Serbia, so they competed as Serbia and Montenegro, however after gaining their independence as a separate state in 2006; they quickly dove into the competition in 2007. Montenegro has competed the past three years with the songs “'Ajde, kroči” by Stevan Faddy, “Zauvijek volim te” by Stefan Filipović, and this year with Andrea Demirović’s, “Just Get Out of My Life”.

In the voting pole of the competition, according to Wikipedia, Montenegro has given the most points to Serbia, Boznia and Herzegovina, Russian, FYR Macedonia, and Slovenia.

There is a small bit of politics that comes into play with Montenegro’s entry into Eurovision. In 2006 Montenegrins voted to split Serbia and Montenegro into two countries. The voted passed by 55.5%, 55% was the required minimum to pass the independence referendum. The very next year Serbia won Eurovision with their entry titled “Molitva” by Marija Serifovic. This meant that Serbia would get to host the next Eurovision, which they did in 2008 holding the contest in Belgrade.

Andrea's song "Just Get Out of My Life" did not pass the first semi-final round of this years Eurovision 2009 contest, thus ending Montenegro's run in the competion.
